Can i recycle clinical waste?

Clinical waste such as nappies, needles, sanitary waste and medical waste all has the potential to be infectious and so the recycling and handling of such waste needs to be carefully considered. Many medical items will have manufacturer supplied information on them which will offer advice on how best to dispose of the material after use.

How is clinical waste recycled?

Clinical waste is recycled by specialist companies who normally pass clinical waste through a sterilisation plant and then into an autoclave which essentially heats and shreds the materials and finally seperates into different fractions such as plastics, organics and so on

What else can be done?

Most local councils offer a specialist service for collecting clinical waste often at no cost. Councils will pass medical and clinical waste on to waste companies who specialise in clinical waste treatment.
