Vinyl Flooring to be Recycled

A new recycling scheme has been set up by flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro to launch in September this year.

Suitably named Recofloor, the scheme will take off-cuts of vinyl’s and safety flooring and will recycle them. They can then be used to produce new types of flooring. Materials that are no longer of any use will be used for the production of road traffic cones and barrier bases.

Axion Consulting will be managing the scheme that started on a trial basis and funded by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme).

The project manager of Recofloor Jane Gardner said “Increasingly customers are keen to see their end-of-life flooring recycled. Recofloor participants benefit from compliance with Site Waste Management legislation and receive a ‘certificate of commitment’ to recycling. Providing their ‘green’ credentials can help them gain new contracts.”

Those taking part in the scheme can deposit their waste flooring at one of the19 sites in the Uk, or by registering with Recofloor, bulk bags will be sent out and collected once filled.

The scheme is hoping to provide more drop-off sites for vinyl waste in the near future.

Chief executive of Altro said “Thanks to the installation of the world’s first in-house safety flooring recycling system, Altro has not sent any waste PVC to landfill since mid-2007 and now we recycle 100 per cent of  our factory waste PVC.”
