Recycling Shredded Paper

Don't shred it unless you have to!

Don't shred it unless you have to!

Can shredded paper be recycled?

Yes, but check with your local authority to see if they collect it, otherwise it can be put into a paper bank.

Before you recycle it :

  • Tie it up in a bag before you put it outside to be collected. It could blow away!
  • Make sure there is no plastic mixed in with it

Not all local authorities will accept shredded paper for recycling as some paper mills cannot process it. Reasons for this:

  • Shredding paper weakens it (the fibre length decreases)
  • It could pose problems at the mill e.g. maintenance and fire hazard issues

Try to reduce the amount of shredded paper you produce by only shredding necessary documents with containing personal information.
